Midnight Blue Mehndi Lehenga: How to Style Shahnaaz for an Evening Mehndi

Midnight blue is the elegant evening alternative to classic mehndi colours. Here is how to style a dark blue lehenga...

When the sun goes down and the dholki starts, the colours that looked bright at noon can suddenly feel flat. Deep, jewel-dark shades do the opposite: they come alive. Midnight blue is one of the most elegant of them, and Shahnaaz by Waqas Shah, a lehenga choli from our Lahore atelier's Madhubala collection, was designed for exactly those evening celebrations.

The essentials

Shahnaaz is a three-piece Pakistani lehenga choli in midnight blue Korean raw silk. The choli neckline is hand-embellished with dabka, naqshi and crystals; the flared lehenga is worked all over in tilla and sequins with mirror work in a flowing pattern; and a lightweight pure organza dupatta completes it. It is made to order in sizes XXS to XL or to your measurements, and costs Rs.95,000.00 for all three pieces.

Why blue works for an evening mehndi

Mehndi colours are traditionally warm, but evening functions have their own light: fairy lights, lamps and candles that are warm-toned. Against that glow, a cool, deep blue looks rich and calm, and mirror work flashes against it like stars. It also gives sisters and guests a way to stand out without competing with the bride's yellow, green or red. In photographs, midnight blue frames the face beautifully and makes jewellery sparkle.

Midnight blue, navy or black?

  • Navy is an everyday dark blue, a little greyer and flatter.
  • Midnight blue is deeper and richer, almost black in low light but with a distinct blue glow.
  • Black is the most dramatic; for a black qawali-night look, see our Lakshmi guide.

A styling checklist for Shahnaaz

  1. Metal: silver, white gold or pearls to echo the mirror work; sapphire or aquamarine stones for colour.
  2. Statement piece: choose either a choker or chandbalis, not both, so the embellished neckline stays the focus.
  3. Hair: a sleek low bun or soft waves pulled to one side, with white motia or jasmine.
  4. Makeup: a smoky navy or charcoal liner, silver-champagne lids and a rosy mauve or soft berry lip.
  5. Dupatta: one shoulder for dancing, over both arms for entrances and photographs.
  6. Shoes and bag: silver khussas and a pearl or silver clutch.
