Laila Mint Green Walima Gown: Design, Handwork and Styling

Laila is a mint green open-front gown for the walima or reception, from our Vyah Diyan Tyaariyan collection. It comes as three pieces in net (the gown, a lehenga and a dupatta) and is hand-embellished with zardozi, dabka, naqshi, resham, sequins, pearls, crystals and fine stone work.

The design, piece by piece

The open-front gown

The gown is the statement piece. It is worked in zardozi, dabka, naqshi and resham, with sequins, pearls, crystals and small stones added by hand, and it opens at the front to show the lehenga beneath.

The lehenga

The lehenga has a graceful flare and lighter embellishment than the gown, so the two layers do not compete. It adds volume when you walk and keeps the look balanced when you sit.

The dupatta

The net dupatta has heavily worked borders in the same zardozi, dabka, naqshi, resham, pearls and crystals as the gown, which ties the outfit together in full-length photographs.

Why mint green for the walima

After a heavy, deep-coloured barat, many brides want the walima to feel lighter. Mint green is fresh without being washed out: it holds its colour under evening lights and looks clean in daytime photographs. It also stands apart from the ivory and blush shades that are common at walimas, so it photographs distinctly. Styling Laila

• Jewellery: polki, emeralds or pearls; gold works with mint, and so do diamonds.
• Makeup: warm peach or nude tones, with a soft glow rather than heavy contour.

• Shoes: gold khussa or heels you can stand in for the length of the reception.
