Pakistani Reception Dresses: How to Choose Your Walima & Reception Look

How to choose a Pakistani reception or walima dress: the right colour, lehenga choli or open-front gown, fabrics and handwork...

The reception, or walima, is the evening the bride finally gets to enjoy her own wedding. The rukhsati is behind her, the guests are relaxed, and the photographs are taken under warm lights rather than daylight. That changes what a good outfit looks like. This guide explains how to choose a Pakistani reception dress: which colours work, when to pick a lehenga choli or an open-front gown, which fabrics and handwork catch evening light, and how early to order. Every look mentioned is made to order at our Lahore atelier.

Reception or walima: what changes for the dress

In many families the walima is hosted by the groom's side the day after the barat, while a reception can be a separate evening party, sometimes abroad, weeks later. Either way, three things are different from the barat:

  • The bride moves more. She greets guests table by table, so the outfit should be lighter than a barat lehenga and easy to walk in.
  • The light is artificial. Hall lighting and fairy lights reward sequins, crystals and zardozi, which sparkle instead of looking flat.
  • Red is optional. Most brides wear red or deep maroon at the barat, so the walima is the chance to wear a softer pastel or a modern statement colour.

Choosing a colour for your reception

Pastels: blush, lilac, mint and misty blue

Soft colours are the classic walima choice because they contrast with the barat red and look graceful in photographs. Pastels also suit gold, silver or diamond-style jewellery equally well, so you can rewear family pieces.

Statement colours: magenta and black

For an evening reception, a deeper colour feels confident and modern. Magenta sits between bridal red and festive pink, while black, once avoided at weddings, is now a favourite for receptions, especially when it is covered in sequins.

Metallics: gold and champagne

Gold and champagne glow under hall lighting without competing with the stage décor. They also bridge the nikkah and the walima if you want one outfit that works for both.

Lehenga choli or open-front gown?

A lehenga choli is the easier choice for a long evening. The flare moves well, the choli can be fitted exactly to you, and the dupatta can be pinned to the head for photographs and draped over the arms later. It is the right pick if you want to dance or spend the evening on your feet.

An open-front gown worn over a lehenga gives the bride a long, regal line and a train for the stage entrance. It photographs beautifully from behind and is the more ceremonial option, ideal if the walima is formal and most of the evening is spent on stage.

Fabric and handwork that shine in evening light

  • Net is the base of almost every reception outfit we make. It is light, holds embellishment well and keeps a heavily worked outfit wearable for hours.
  • Sequins catch every movement under hall lights, which is why our formal reception lehengas carry all-over sequin work.
  • Zardozi metal-thread embroidery adds depth and a richer, older-world sparkle, usually on the choli and the waist belt.
  • Crystals, pearls and beads lift the neckline and sleeves, the parts of the outfit seen most in close-up photographs.

How early to order your reception dress

Every outfit is made to your measurements, so plan backwards from the date. Formal reception lehengas take about four weeks to make, followed by free shipping worldwide by DHL or SkyNet: 2 to 5 days within Pakistan and 7 to 14 days to the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, UAE and Europe. Full bridal couture takes ten to twelve weeks in total, delivery included. Any import duty abroad is paid by the customer. If the reception is abroad, add a fitting buffer of a week or two and tell us the date on WhatsApp before you order.

Reception looks for sisters and bridesmaids

The reception is also the evening the bride's sisters dress up the most. A simple rule keeps the stage balanced: if the bride wears a pastel, the bridesmaids can go deeper, in magenta, black or gold; if the bride chooses a statement colour, the group looks best in soft neutrals. The formal reception lehengas above are made in the same sizes, XS to XL or made to measure, so a group order can be planned together.

Reception and walima dress questions

Walima ke liye kaunsa rang behtar hai? (Which colour is best for the walima?)

Pastels such as blush, lilac, mint and misty blue are the most popular because they contrast with a red barat look. For an evening reception, magenta, black, gold and champagne look striking under hall lighting.

Can I wear a lehenga to the walima instead of a gown?

Yes. A lehenga choli is lighter and easier to move in, which suits a long evening of greeting guests. An open-front gown is the more ceremonial choice for a formal stage walima.

Is black acceptable for a Pakistani reception?

For receptions and evening parties, yes. Black with sequins and zardozi reads as glamorous rather than sombre, and it is a popular choice for brides' sisters and bridesmaids too.

Can one outfit work for both the nikkah and the walima?

A gold or champagne outfit such as Golden Patel or Dilnashin works for both, especially if you style it with lighter jewellery for the nikkah and heavier pieces for the walima.

Can I change the colour or the size?

Every outfit is made to order to your size or to your own measurements, and colour or design requests can be discussed with our consultant on WhatsApp before you order.

Can I return a made-to-order reception dress?

As each outfit is made especially for you, change-of-mind returns and exchanges are not available. Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours of purchase, subject to approval and a 6% cancellation fee, and anything that arrives defective or different from your confirmed order will be put right. See our Refund Policy.
